First Steps: Becoming a Member of Peace UMC

At Peace we take church membership seriously. We view it as a commitment to discipleship and service. The apostle Paul used the image of a living body: “For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-and we were all made to drink of one Spirit” (I Cor. 12:13). In this biblical sense, to be a member is to be part of a living organism–a vital community animated by the Spirit of God to love and to serve. Paul’s statement also points to the inclusiveness of the church: we are meant to make this journey of faith together, in community.

The first step of membership is baptism. Through baptism we become members of the Body of Christ. If you have already been baptized in another Christian church, we will ask you to reaffirm your baptism. If you have never been baptized, we will be happy to baptize you during the membership confirmation ceremony.

There are two ways that we accept members into our congregation:

Reaffirmation of Faith. If you are a member of another United Methodist church, or another denomination (such as Baptist, Presbyterian or Lutheran), then you will want to prepare to transfer your membership from that church to Peace.

Profession of Faith. If you have never been a member of another church, or are a member of another Christian church that does not transfer membership, you will want to prepare to make a profession of faith and be received as a member of Peace.

We have a four-step membership process that will help you to understand what we mean by membership in the United Methodist Church, discern Gods call on your life, and prepare you to join our congregation.

Step One: Attend a new member introductory session. We will give you a membership kit containing:

  • A copy of A Disciples Path: Deepening Your Relationship with Christ and the Church
  • Handouts that you will use during your study

We will also assign you a Peace Shepherd who will be your point of contact throughout the membership process.

Step Two: Work through A Disciples Path at your leisure. Meet with your Peace Shepherd at least once. When you have completed the study, attend a First Steps Workshop.

Step Three: Attend a First Steps Workshop with your Shepherd.

Step Four: Present yourself for membership before the congregation during worship
