ENGAGE: Outreach in Our Own Backyard & Around the World

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can. – John Wesley

Jesus said that we are to be light and salt to the world. That’s why in the United Methodist Church we refer to it as “salty service,” because we are going out to serve our communities in the name of Jesus Christ.  The founder of Methodism, John Wesley, wanted “enthused disciples” who were on fire for Christ (hence the symbol of Methodism is the cross and flame!). Living Faith means that we are alive in Christ and that Christ is alive in our world through us. Please join us as we spread the gospel of peace and love through our service. Here are some current outreach and mission opportunities.
Local Outreach Opportunities:
4M – Making Memories with Monthly Missions: Once a month our youth group coordinates groups from Peace to go out to serve in various organizations and community events within Central Florida. For more information please visit our 4M webpage.
Blood Drive: Blood is needed by patients facing planned and unplanned medical procedures, such as trauma victims, cancer patients and premature babies. Several times each year the Big Red Bus visits Peace to collect blood donations. www.oneblood.org
Christmas Gift Share: Do you have NEW or GENTLY USED items that you would like to give away for someone to use as Christmas gifts?  Peace is once again sponsoring a day of sharing where folks can bring in items and others may take them to give to their families and friends (reduce, reuse, recycle). On Sunday, December 8th simply bring in items to donate and place them on the tables located on the church portico. Everyone is then welcome to “shop” in between worship services.  Any leftover items will be given to local charities.
Community Hope Center: CHC assists low-income, poverty level families living homeless or in motels and hotels along Osceola County’s 192 Corridor. Peace members volunteer at their Kissimmee campus. www.hope192.com

Daily Devotion Writers: Do you enjoy writing?  Would you like to help others grown in their spiritual lives?  Please consider joining our volunteer team of daily devotion writers.  We want to make it easy for our church members to get started building a habit of spending time with God each day by reading these devotional emails and scripture.  No experience is required!  We know the Holy Spirit will touch readers through your words.  For more information, or to join our writing team for this new worship series, please contact the Church Office

Dress a Girl Around the World Ministry: Our Dress a Girl Around the World ministry sews dresses, dolls, and shorts for children around the world living in poverty. Our dresses have been sent to Haiti, the Philippines, India, Nigeria, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Honduras, Belize, Uganda, and Zambia. Workshops are held weekly at Peace—all skill levels are welcome.
Give Kids the World: GKTW is a non-profit organization that exists to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families from around the world. Our church members volunteer weekly both individually and in groups. www.gktw.org
Habitat for Humanity: Habitat has a very active presence in Orlando building affordable homes (with sweat equity provided by those who will live in them) and rehabbing foreclosed properties as well. Peace regularly sends teams to local Habitat home build days. www.habitatorlandoosceola.org. (Next volunteer day is Saturday, October 19th).
Hope for the Homeless: This ministry focuses on raising money and packing backpacks for individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as educating students on statistics on the state of homelessness in the US. Donations can be canned food items (with pop tabs on the lids), deodorant, tooth brushes, toothpaste, razors, feminine hygiene products and most importantly—BACKPACKS! Follow our Instagram account @h4h_peaceyouth for more information.
John Young Elementary School Volunteers: We continue to enjoy our relationship with John Young Elementary School (JYE). There is a huge need for one-on-one tutoring and mentoring. The hours and days are flexible, but obviously take place during daytime hours. Do you have an hour to spare once a week? Could you go during lunch hour? Perhaps go to work one hour later? If you are inspired to volunteer, a background check through ADDitions must be completed. Click here for the link to that application. If this sounds like something you are interested in, or if you have any questions, you can contact the church office.
Prayer Chain Ministry: The Prayer Chain is an email distribution group of over 100 persons whose ministry is to pray for others in time of need, loss, illness, praise, and thanksgiving. Prayer requests are received via the Sunday morning worship Connect Cards or reported to the church office and then distributed via email.
Prayer Shawl Ministry: Prayer shawls are given to people who are ill or hospitalized, suffering chronic conditions, undergoing chemotherapy, or simply in need of comfort and prayer. Our knitting and crochet team meet once a month at Peace for a workshop. All skill levels are welcome.
Relay for Life “Peace Out” Team: Hunter’s Creek Relay for Life raises funds for the American Cancer Society. Peace has an active Relay team each year. This year’s event is November 19, 2019.
School Supply & Gift Card Drive: Every summer we collect school supplies and backpacks to benefit students in local public schools – drop off paper, crayons & pencils in the church hallway bin.  Monetary donations and gift cards may be placed in the offering plate or given to the church office.
Team Peace Cyclists: A group of bicyclists of varying ages and skill levels who ride for fellowship and fund-raising for various charitable causes, most famously the annual Bike MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Citrus Tour. (Next charity ride – November 2019).
Keep an eye on the Peace Calendar page for upcoming dates for these ministries. Contact the Peace Church Office for more information or to get connected.
